Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is a medical condition that occurs when cellular damage has been done due to an inadequate supply of oxygen to the brain. In the newborn who has suffered lack of sufficient flow of blood with sufficient oxygen to the brain there is a high risk of Encephalopathy ( permanent brain damage). The same conditions which produce HIE will result in still birth or neonatal death, if severe and present long enough.

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) can be caused by umbilical cord prolapse , uterine rupture, hypotension, abruption of the placenta, or other maternal complications. While some birth injuries are unavoidable, many are not, and are caused by medical malpractice or negligence on the part of hospital and medical staff.

If you have questions as to the cause of a birth injury or infant death, the medical malpractice lawyers and on-staff medical professionals of Meyers Giuffre Evans & Schwarzwaelder are available for a free legal consultation and case evaluation.
