Art Schwarzwaelder is a partner at the law firm of Meyers Giuffre Evans & Schwarzwaelder, LLC. For over 28 years, his practice has been primarily concentrated in the area of medical malpractice.
Art was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1953. His parents emigrated to the United States from Europe at the outbreak of World War II. As a first generation American, Art was raised in an environment emphasizing the importance of a good education and hard work.
Art grew up in South Hills of Pittsburgh (Scott Township), and graduated in 1971 from Chartiers Valley High School as Valedictorian of his class. He next attended Dartmouth College, where he was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa and received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude, in 1975. Art completed his graduate education in 1978 at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree.
Art began his legal career as a defense lawyer, and then partner in a well-respected Pittsburgh civil litigation firm. In representing injured parties in medical malpractice cases, it is not only important to master the facts, law, and medicine supporting your client’s cause, but to anticipate and then refute the contentions and theories offered by the defense. From his earlier experience in representing physicians and hospitals, Art learned first hand how and why medical errors all too often occur. His diverse professional background has given Art the broad perspective which he finds valuable in advocating for injured individuals and their families.
Art is deeply committed to recovering full and fair compensation for his clients. He recognizes the importance of a thorough investigation and meticulous research to achieve a just resolution of the many challenges confronting his clients. Along with the other lawyers and professional staff in the firm, Art is willing to devote the time, effort and resources necessary to properly represent individuals and families victimized by medical malpractice. Art’s choice to represent injured patients with meritorious claims is motivated first and foremost by the opportunity to make a difference in his clients’ lives, and secondly to help improve the quality of medical care within the community, particularly in matters raising concerns about institutional and systemic negligence.
Over the years, the scope of Art’s practice has been extensive and includes wrongful death and personal injury actions arising from delayed diagnosis and treatment of cancer (including malignancies of the breast, prostate, cervix, and bile duct), stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolus, hydrocephalus, and other serious medical conditions. He also has experience representing patients harmed by medical and surgical errors arising in the emergency room, intensive care unit, operating room, and the doctor’s office. In addition to medical malpractice actions, Art has served as counsel in motor vehicle negligence, premises liability, other serious personal injury matters, and commercial disputes.
Art has been recognized by his peers. He has consistently received a Martindale Hubble highest rating of AV. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (2004). This prestigious national organization accepts no more than 1% of all lawyers in any state by invitation only. In 1998, Art was also admitted as a Fellow to the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County whose membership is limited to 250 lawyers from the plaintiffs and defense bar who are actively engaged in civil practice in Allegheny County. Art has also served as an invited speaker at continuing legal education programs focusing on medical malpractice and trial advocacy sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, Allegheny Bar Association, and the Allegheny County Medical Society.
Married for over 23 years, Art has three children, two of whom will soon be attending college, and the third in high school. When not working, Art enjoys spending time with his immediate and extended family, most of whom are fortunately still residing in the Pittsburgh area. He also enjoys tennis, softball, reading, and old, classic movies.
